Spatial Data and Analysis in Ecology and Evolution
Overview
Increasingly, ecologists and evolutionary biologists are incorporating high-resolution geographical data into their research to address spatially-explicit hypotheses. The advancement of spatial data and analyses has opened the door for scientists from various disciplines to tap into these resources. However, many ecology and evolutionary graduate students lack sufficient GIS training, potentially excluding valuable/interesting results or producing erroneous conclusions. Additionally, access to GIS training can also be limiting; GIS courses within geography departments are often technical and beyond the needs of other students, and the majority of graduate programs outside of geography do not provide GIS courses. In a joint effort, the Biodiversity Research Centre and the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries is hosting a workshop to provide GIS training to graduate students and early career researchers. The Workshop is targeted towards graduate students looking to incorporate spatial data into their research, and will focus on specific examples through a series of independent modules, with both lecture and lab (computer-based) components. Participants can expect to obtain and develop a working knowledge on spatial data and its various forms, spatial analyses and issues, GIS software, and the tools and techniques for application to ecological and evolutionary systems. |
